DR. SENEM DONATAN MOHAN

I am an artist, a scientist, a dreamer, an engineer, a performer and a midwife of stories. I tell stories in order to cultivate love and kindness in the world, to connect with people in a sincere and joyful way and to share the wisdom, magic and power of stories.

Being able to tell a story in a compelling way is innate in all of us. Since it is a natural and creative process, it is like a birth. Having 21 years experience in performing arts, I am willing to be the midwife for your birth process so that you could give birth to your own creativity through storytelling and you could embrace, craft and then share your own story.

When I was a little girl, I loved to imagine and then set up spaces where I could play together with my friends. Made-up submarines were my favourite game spaces. Diving deep in my imagination was real fun. At secondary school I discovered two more imaginary playgrounds. One was atoms and molecules. Chemistry and biology were my favourite lessons. I was amazed by the dynamic interactions happening deep down at microlevel. Making visible that which was invisible to our physical senses always enchanted me. My other play area was drama. Performing on stage and connecting with people became my passion.

For a long time, art and science were two opposing driving forces in my life. During the day time, I was a scientist in the field of bionanotechnology while in the evenings I worked as a performing artist, director and dramaturgist. In 2010, myself and my colleagues from the theatre company ‘’Seyyar Sahne’’ imagined establishing a performing art residency centre in a rural area in order to be connected more with nature.  So I now got the opportunity to play with an imaginary space in macroscale. This beautiful dream called ‘’Theatre Madrasa’’ was built in two years. I was encouraged by this achievement and decided to align my artistic and scientific skills so I left the academy because I wanted to engineer my artistic dreams.

One day in 2013, I joined a storytelling workshop in Theatre Madrasa. I had a revelation. My most enjoyable activity from childhood; setting up imaginary spaces and playing with others was an art form! Storytelling enabled me to dive deep, bringing the hidden treasures to the surface, making the invisible visible and sharing with others. Since then, I continue to enhance my artistic development in storytelling. It is a lifelong journey.

Along the way, I had the privilege of realising a lot of dreams by collaborating with other artists. Here are some organisations I am involved in:

Seiba International Storytelling Centre – Co-founder, Trainer

Federation of European Storytelling – Executive Committee Member

Storytellers of Ireland – Member

Beyond Borders Linking Our Stories Initiative – Coordinator for Turkey

Kanka Productions – Co-founder

Theatre Madrasa Performing Art Residency – Co-founder

At the moment, I am chasing after another dream of mine. I have written a children’s book in which a collection of pourquoi stories are intertwined with scientific knowledge. It will be published in autumn 2020.

If you would like to book me as a storyteller, or if you are interested in joining my workshops or my story coaching sessions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
